Salesforce unmanaged packaged apps cannot be upgraded. So the best non-developer way to get around it is to uninstall and reinstall the app.
Another way is to is find and replace the component files of you unmanaged app. You can update the component files using ANT-based Force.com Migration Tool.Because of this limitation, there should be a definitive strategy when creating ad-hoc apps like unmanaged packages, keeping in mind portability and scalability.
