  • Can we upgrade an unmanaged packaged app in Salesforce?

Posted by Hazel on March 16, 2016 at 9:13 am

I have uploaded an unmanaged packaged app in salesforce Appexchange around 3 months back. From then i have added some new features to the app, and now wanted to upgrade the old version but the system says that ‘this app is already installed’. Anyway i can get around this without uninstalling and reinstalling the app?

Salesforce unmanaged packaged apps cannot be upgraded. So the best non-developer way to get around it is to uninstall and reinstall the app.
Another way is to is find and replace the component files of you unmanaged app. You can update the component files using ANT-based Force.com Migration Tool.

Because of this limitation, there should be a definitive strategy when creating ad-hoc apps like unmanaged packages, keeping in mind portability and scalability.

Hazel - if you send the url for the new/updated package won't that in essence do an upgrade?

@tim-lynchapplango-com Nice point. Yes, new package URL should do an upgrade. Whats the best practice - do we fist need to uninstall the app, then install through the URL or just upgrade the app without uninstall?

    Hello,

You Can't upgrade the unmanaged package you need to firstally uninstall and again install the package.

To convert an unmanaged package into a managed package:

    1. Enable managed packages for your organization.
    2. From Setup, enter <kbd>Packages</kbd> in the <samp>Quick Find</samp> box, then select Packages.
    3. Edit the package that you want to make managed, then select Managed.Regards : salesforce training in pune
